Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"The majority of women receiving abortions are not the type of people ProLife protesters perceive. We are regular women whom take contreception, try to prevent these things from happening. The fact that a woman whom gets raped and falls pregnant cannot get an abortion is absurd. If a woman is already pregnant and and the baby died insurers, she cannot opt for the removal of that baby and must carry it and birth it deceased. This is awful, imagine the repurcussions of trauma reduced if these options were made available. Please make this more accessible."

"Women elect to have abortions for many reasons, it is not a decision taken lightly. Women are put in the very difficult position of deciding whether to terminate a pregnancy versus the knowledge of the inability of being able to care, provide, educate, nurture and safely raise children who have access to all opportunities in our society."
