Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Please support the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019, without further amendment. Women and their doctors should not face the stigma of criminalisation for abortion, which is and should legally be considered, a medical matter, not a matter for the Crimes Act! The Bill will help prevent unsafe abortion by improving access, especially in remote and regional areas, where women often have to go to great expense to gain access to a medical procedure more easily available in urban areas. Please do not support the proposed Amendments. These issues may be important, but they do not belong tacked on to this Bill, and will only distort the intent of the Bill. The proposers could create their own Bills to deal with these matters, rather than try to make this Bill unwieldy and unworkable for ordinary people trying to access a common medical procedure. Most people in NSW support the right to safe, legal abortion – it’s time to overturn this archaic law!."

"Knowing that I had options and would be treated with care and respect in all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth gave me the strength to have two children. Women will be empowered if they have support and professional care in all aspects of pregnancy and birth, including if they make the difficult decision to terminate. Women’s health is not negotiable."

"Be resolute and don’t let the ultra-conservatives sabotage this Bill. It is a health and human rights issue – women and their doctors should decide this. The general population is overwhelmingly in favour . You are there to carry out the wishes of the community. Please do."
