Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"A woman’s body belongs to her, not the church or the judiciary. Abortion is a medical issue, not a criminal matter."

It should be free, safe and easily accessible."

"This is both a health issue, as well as a simple human rights issue. No person should be forced to risk death or permanent harm under any circumstances, but particularly when it benefits nobody."

"Accident and coercion aren’t the right reasons for a child to come into the world. Forcing individuals & families to carry and raise children that weren’t planned for just contributes to stress, family breakdown, poverty and other detriments to society as a whole."

"Fair, safe and free access to abortion is essential for the welfare of parents who would otherwise be forced to raise a child, for the welfare of a child who may be born into poverty or simply an uncaring household, and for the society that supports them if that unwanted birth should be forced upon them. Support the most vulnerable people in our society by making abortion legal."

"I do not know if this very obvious and common sense approach to the issue is sufficient to ensure extremists’ views are ignored. I cannot believe we are at the mercy of theocracy in straightening out this archaic and punishing legal vestige of a bygone era. When laws like this were created, women were considered to be childish and dependent, incapable of making decisions. The churches would like to force women back into that cage. The brainwashed men who run those churches and the deluded women they control may be a squeaky wheel, but they are far, far from the majority of Australians.

Please ensure that abortion in NSW is brought into the system of health care as a private medical issue for individual women and removed entirely from criminal statutes The state has no right to be involved in this and someone else’s religious beliefs most certainly do not. I do not wish to live in a theocracy."
