Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"I believe that women should have the right over their own bodies. It changes the woman’s whole world when she falls pregnant and if she isn’t able to fully care for it or isn’t ready why should we force her into it. Some women fall pregnant and it isn’t their fault it was forced upon them and they should be able to choose whether they want to continue on with it. We have rights over everything else in this world why not the choice to have a family. Being pregnant is one thing but having to raise the child and look after it is a lifelong commitment and an expensive and mentally and physically draining. Women should be given the right to choose when they’re ready. People make mistakes why should they be forced to live with it the rest of their life. Give women control over their bodies and their decisions"

"Because why should a woman have to have someone else make choices about their body?! And a woman should not have to have a baby if she does not want to"

"My body. My choice. Simple as that. What kind of archaic society are we living in if we as autonomous beings do not have the right to make choices regarding our own bodies and reproductive rights. This is not a religious issue. It’s a violation of freedom."
