Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right. Queensland women must be free to make decisions regarding their own reproductive processes. No one should be forced to endure a pregnancy or give birth to a child against their will. Access to safe, affordable abortion is essential for women to retain control of their lives."

"Safe, legal abortions are currently only available to Queensland women that reside in metropolan, south-easterly areas of that state where it is easy to travel to NSW. Keeping abortion in the criminal code denies women of the bodily automony that every person deserves and further discriminates and marginalises the poor (who may not have means to raise a child or obtain an abortion) and those living in rural parts of the state."

"There are too many unwanted and unloved children brought into the world, two lives don’t need to be ruined because a women doesn’t have the right to decide what happens to her own body."

"Agency over ones body ought to be a right. To deny someone control of their body is cruel and absurd. Additionally no child should be born to a family/parent that cannot support it, either financially, emotionally or otherwise."
