Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Because it it 2017, not 1817. Because my body, my choice. Because to live with dignity in the manner of my choosing is my right as a human being. Because no one should be forced to carry and care for a child that they are incapable, ill-equipped, or unwilling to have. Because no child should be born unwanted. Because if men were the ones capable of pregnancy, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. Because if you don’t like abortion then you don’t have to have one, but if it is right for you then it is none of my business to tell you that you shouldn’t. Because religion and morality are not mutually exclusive. Because separation of church and state. Because Australia is supposed to be a secular society. Because access to legal, safe abortions saves lives. Because judge not, lest Ye be judged. Because it is my right, and it is right."
