Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"It’s ridiculous women aren’t able to make a choice regarding their own body. Abortion is not a crime. It’s outrageous to think the legalisation of abortion will result in women terminating pregnancy based on the gender of their child."

"No contraception is 100% effective yet anti-abortion laws sends out the message to women that you had sex, you fell pregnant, and now you and your body is no longer your decision but the decision and political arguments of other people. In 2017 a woman still doesn’t have autonomy over her own body and that’s a scary thing.

Banning abortions doesn’t really stop abortions happening just stops the safe ones."

"I believe that women have the right to decide to abort as there are many circumstances that may affect their abilities to raise a child. Not only that, but having a child is obviously life changing and if the individuals aren’t ready for that commitment, they should have the right to choose."
