Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

Signed,

"This is an individual’s right to choose what is right for them, their situation, their mental health and their body. Every situation is different and should not be judged."

"Abortion is a woman’s choice, not the choice of a group of politicians. You don’t decide who can and can’t treat there own cancer so why decide on behalf of women?"

"This is a no brainer. I can’t believe we’re so backwards here that I have to sign a petition for something like this in today’s day and age. Just do the right thing and pass the legislation."

"I’m signing because I’ve had two abortions in Queensland and I am not a criminal. I’m woman exercising my right to what I do want with my own body. If my daughter should ever be in a situation where she needs an abortion I would like her, too, to feel she is not stigmatised by this archaic law."

"Because this is a medical issue between a woman and her doctor and not a crime. It is very much an equity issue as well because middle class women will always find a way to choose while the disadsvantaged won’t."

"Religion abjectly MUST be separate from politics, and conservatives and liberals alike must recognise the consequent impact on women, men and children in situations where the right to choose is not available. Don’t be responsible for broken hearts, broken lives and broken families. Let every child who is born enter a world where they’re loved, wanted and able to be supported and cared for by the adults in their lives. The right to choose helps ensure this is the case for babies born in Queensland."
