Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"As a human rights lawyer, and someone who has worked for Legal Aid Queensland with women, particularly those who are further marginalised, I know laws prohibiting abortion only stigmatise women making it more difficult for them to access suitable sexual and reproductive health care. Beyond criminal laws this sends a message that women’s bodies are not their own, reinforcing gender stereotypes and inequality. I am appalled that a friend was turned away from a leading Queensland hospital because it was ‘faith based’ and refused to provide an abortion even when there was severe foetal impairment, labelling this as an ‘optional’ abortion. Please legalise abortion if women’s lives matter to you."

"Stop policing women’s bodies!!!
Take these backwards, outdated, back-water, pro life leftover laws out of the equation and get with the new century. This is about health and well being, not a small percentage of the populations personal beliefs or opinions."

"For a supposedly advanced society, denying someone the right to choose what happens with their own body should be what’s criminal."

"I have a right to choose what happens to my body: at this moment in history I have more rights to my dead body and use of its organs than I do to my living body and the need to host a sexualy transmitted infection. Abortion is a woman’s right."

"I believe that as a woman we deserve a say in what we want to do with our bodys and it should be our choice as to what to do if we get stuck in a pregnancy situation that decision doesn’t belong to anyone but the female who has to carry it and its important to give our our rights to our own lives. Also if a woman was raped and had falllen pregnant would you still believe that denying a woman her rights to decide to have an abortion???"
