Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"If men could be pregnant this would not be an issue.
Women should be trusted with their bodies.
There is no place for laws continued to appease a loud religious minority in a secular country!"

"Are the state governments in Queensland and New South Wales still living in the Dark Ages? A woman must have the right to terminate her pregnancy – for whatever reason, and there are many.
As a victim of rape, many years ago, in a country where abortion was not illegal, I was relieved to be able to have a termination rather than give birth to a rapist’s child.
Other women have their own reasons to end a pregnancy: poverty; too many young children already; needing to care for a loved one who is terminally ill; and numerous other reasons.
I was shocked when I learned, today, that abortion is still illegal in these two states. It is definitely well past time for this outdated law to be overturned. Please make this a priority."
