Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

Signed,

"I believe that one day if I should fall into a situation where I need to decide what’s best for my future I want the choice. I don’t feel strongly to motherhood and believe that I would not be a good mother figure to a child, nor do I want the opportunity to “prove myself wrong”. I believe there are enough people in the world and I would rather adopt a child without a family than bring in more weight and burden to the environment."

"I fell pregnant at the age of 16. I was able to abort because I lived in a state where it was a simple process. I went to university, I am engaged to be married to the love of my life, I earn $200,000 per year and am the head of digital at an advertising agency. I also started my own creative agency and made $100,000 in 3 months. I am living the best life I could ever imagine and earn enough money to live comfortably, put my soon to be wife through study and amd planning to have a baby who will be balancd and happy because I am ready. If I wasn’t able to have that abortion, this would not be my life. And it certainly would not be the life my children will have."
