Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Men in suits who pretend to understand women’s rights, have no right to say what a woman does to her own body.
If the liberal party want to be seen to be representing their people, and want to stop the image that they are misogynists who want to control what women do, then they really have no choice but to change this law.
To the labour party – you have been in power long enough to get this changed. You also have no excuse for this."

"I was born and raised in QLD and found it horrendous that if any of my friends or I ever needed to make the profoundly personal decision to have an abortion – we may have potentially faced criminal charges & likewise the people providing the service would also be subject to legal scrutiny.
This is an issue of womens health – it is not and should not be treated as criminal activity. That is simply continuing to put women in danger."

"There are so many reasons to be pro-choice, that I am astonished we are still debating this in 2018.
– Abortions will either be legal and safe, or illegal and unsafe. To pretend otherwise is to deny the evidence of the past few hundred years.
– Pregnancy is not a mandatory part of life and women should have a choice in whether to have a baby or not.
– This is about an individual’s right to choose their own future. Those who are of the opposite opinion to people like me can choose to simply not get an abortion. Just because one person chooses to have an abortion, does not mean that anyone else is expected to make the same choice."

"If you don’t like abortions, don’t have one."

"Why must the women that wish to get an abortion be treated like they are criminals – it takes two to have an unplanned pregnancy. Not all contrception are 100% effective.
Also it would be unfair for the baby to born when the mother could not afford it or was in a difficult situation."
