Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"If I never was given the choice to abortion I would have had the journey ahead of raising a child at 15. I have had the chance to finish school, and I was in control of my body"

"I am currently completing a degree in geology.
I plan to buy a home in the future in which I can raise a planned family.
I want my children to be born when I am ready for them, when I can provide for them.

What would you have me do, given I was raped whilst walking home from a late tutorial?
Go to jail for seeking an abortion? Drop out of university and never obtain a degree or a good income or future home?

It is not up to you to tell me what to do with my body.
I will decide what is right for myself and my offspring.
If you are against abortion, then don’t get one! But don’t take away my rights or my child when I can’t care for it.

If you are against ‘child suffering’ then you should take more steps to look after the children alive today. Being born into a family which is not prepared to spend the next twenty odd years looking after someone is disastrous."

"you do not have the right to make this choice for women. we are the ones that get pregnant, we are the only ones who can make this sort of decision"

"Women should be able to make their own decisions about their body. It’s not up to anyone else to decide whether or not I have a baby! My body, my choice."
