Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Who are you people and why do you think that you have the right to decide on my body? It’s my body! And don’t give me this ‘right for life’ thing. I’m jewish and acording to my fate, this is not life! According to Muslim law, this is not life. According to sience this is not life. But you know all of that, you just don’t care. It’s all just power and politics for you."

"Because when you listen to real stories of women seeking abortions, you will realise the abortion laws are wrong and are hurting women when they are most vulnerable. Further, the women who have abortions at times of crisis, overwhelmingly over their lifetime, dedicate a giant proportion of their life effort to supporting life, in the lives of their children and the lives of others. Politicians could follow their example by supporting these women in times of difficulty by supporting their choices."

"Because this is such a no brainer I will continue to vote Green/ASP until you get these progressive social issues right and then we can get back to the important things like health, education and the economy"

"The Australian public no longer view terminations as criminal acts. The majority of the community accept termination as part of a woman’s bodily autonomy and ability to determine outcomes in their own lives. It is irresponsible for elected representatives to vote based on their own personal beliefs and in accordance with their own agendas, rather than in line with the beliefs held in the communities they are elected to represent. They have failed in their duty to the women of New South Wales."

"For goodness sake. Please listen to the people. Especially those with a uterus who are most affected. Get rid of this dated, unjust law that violates international health standards and treaties.
