Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"I do not want to see the country especially NSW go back to “backyard abortions” and life threatening decisions that women have to make because the Parliament treat women as voters without rights. This is a choice that everywoman has the right to make about her own body."

"It is a woman’s right to decide whether she has an abortion or not. this decision should not be made by the courts. It is a personal decision and often a difficult one. Having archaic laws in place that make it illegal and inhibits access and funding makes this decision much harder. If an unborn child is unwanted or at risk it is better that it does not come into the world at all."
