Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Our body, our choice! This is basic healthcare and should be accessible just like any other medical procedure."

"Abortion is health care and it’s time NSW law recognised that and stopped treating women as criminals. Leaving it in the Crimes Act places both women and doctors in a legal grey area that makes access difficult. It is a burden we would not accept for any other kind of health care. We deserve safe, legal and accessible abortion health care."

"Because contraception fails. Because the rates of ‘stealthing’ (male removes condom without female’s knowledge or consent) are increasing. Because even if these facts weren’t the case, I (and every woman) should have the right to make my own choices about my health & my body.. Thrre is no room for religion or politics (left vs right, progressive vs regressive) in this debate. You know who else believes in scripture over rights, scriptural literalism (although it doesn’t mention women not having the right to choose, or abortion in any religious text I’m familiar with), and needing to control women’s body & her choices? The Taliban, Daesh & all other regressive religious groups the Western world abhors. So one has to ask…how is it our “conservative” elected officials are making the same decisions those groups champion, and based on the same ideology? It’s time to ensure a woman is in control of her life, and her body. I assure you, we’re more than capable of having a rational conversation with our doctor, weighing up the pros & cons, consulting with anyone we feel will assist in the decision-making process, considering the impact on our body & future, and making the final decision. Oh, and using scare tactics about ‘late term abortions’ is ridiculous…they’re not performed on a whim. They’re done when the pregnancy is no longer viable and/or the woman’s health/life is at risk. Using those as an excuse to deny our rights means you’re basically saying all we’re good for is reproduction…which is a little too much like inferring we’re Handmaids right? So get educated, use facts not rhetoric, and pray in private (keep your religion out of our non-denominational society)."

"Woman (indeed everyone, but especially women because of the disparities in health care) should be able to decide exactly what they do to their own bodies. Abortion is a right every woman should have. It should be free. It should be destigmatized. Everyone should have determination over their own health care. This is not the state’s business."

"Because I’ve had an abortion and they’re no picnic!
If a woman has the need for one, support her don’t demonise her.
Only babies who are wanted should be born. No one should grow up feeling they weren’t wanted!"

"Ridiculous that a religious hangover still exists in NSW when EVEN Queensland have decriminalised abortion. Get on with it NSW."

"We will. eventually have to get a licence to have a child. In the meantime these archaic man-made laws make life diffcult for decent people. Get into the 21 st. century,"
