Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"I’m over seventy and feel as if I have spent all my adult life advocating for women’s right to safe termination of pregnancy, if that is their choice. It’s never a choice that is made lightly."

"Abortion is not a decision that women make lightly. It has many impacts on the decision maker. It should be a womens rights to make that decision and she should be supported fully in her decision."

"A woman’s right to bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right.

In addition, denying women access to safe abortion does not stop abortions. It just drives women into more desperate and dangerous situations.

If the intention of the pro-life lobby is to reduce abortions, then they should be lobbying for free access to family planning and contraception and educating men of their responsibilities"

"Criminalising abortion does not prevent abortion – it just ensures women are demonised and unsupported and forces them to have unsafe abortions.

The right to abortion is key to gender equality in society – which in turn helps prevent violence agaibst women.

Look at the research. Make the right choice – which is PRO CHOICE."
