Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Abortion is healthcare. Healthcare is a right. In practice abortion is available in QLD due to the exceptions under the law considering the mental & physical health of the mother – however it’s dubious legal position makes many healthcare providers uneasy about discussing or referring patients for abortion, and leaves women & practitioners open to the unnecessary psychological strain of the threat of prosecution.
It’s not 1899. There is no single good reason to keep this outdated, irrelevant law. One could argue it undermines the validity of our legal system. Time to change it.

"I found out, during my final year of high school, that I was pregnant. I had just put in my applications to attend university. I live in a state where abortion is legal- so I got to choose. I chose to attend university and have my baby. Becoming a mother at such a young age comes with its trials. It is definitely not for everyone. If this were something I hadn’t got to think through (safe in the knowledge I had options), if this weren’t my CHOICE, I couldn’t imagine how much harder it would have been. To remove someone’s right to choose for them self is to render them powerless. Women deserve to choose when, and if, they become mothers."
