Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"When are people going to understand this, that women should have their right to their body. The debate is finished, and it ended the first time when the very first woman died from giving herself an abortion. This has been an outright shameful thing that any government could do to outlaw abortions. It shows a complete lack of understanding, and ignorance on the topic,. But not only that, it shows the control hold on women, which is disgusting!"

"By stopping a women’s right to have an abortion you are dragging us backwards – if you aren’t a pregnant woman you should have absolutely no say in this matter. And if you are a pregnant woman the only say you should have is regarding your own body."
