Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Women have abortions for many reasons, and usually, none of those reasons is good. It may be that they are not able to care for a child, or financially provide for one, it may be that the woman has been sexually assaulted or in an abusive relationship or there are problems with the health of the baby. It may be that the woman is barely out of childhood herself. It may even be just that a woman does not want to be a mother- and in this day and age that should be reason enough. It’s traumatic enough to have to make this already incredibly difficult decision, which already comes with a slew of social pressures, without having the added stress and stigma of having committed a crime. This law is outdated. Women should have the right to choose what happens to their bodies and their lives long before 2017!"
