Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Abortion, or Termination should not be a crime. it is most generally the last resort of women with all other options exhausted. The women that suffer the most from the criminalisation of abortion are as always the women most marginalised by such issues as poverty and lack of access to health services for various reasons. After many years working in Women’s Services, I have never, I repeat NEVER, seen a woman or girl seek a termination frivolously."

"Being adopted people assume I’m against adoption but it’s quit the opposite. I believe everyone should be able to choose to have or not have children. There are so many kids in the foster system now, we need to make it clear it’s ok to choose to abort if you don’t want or feel your unfit to bear a child."
