Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"I am signing this because there is no logical reason to keep abortion criminalized.

1) “Keep your legs closed!”
Firstly, legs closed sex is a great method for enhancing orgasms, but not a proven method of contraception.
However, since you probably meant “Don’t have sex”, here.
Sex. Is. Not. A. CRIME.
SEX. IS. NOT. A. CRIME.
SEX is awesome. Sex is healthy and fun and has multiple health benefits, on top of being a wonderful form of intimacy and connection between people, married or just casual sex.
Sex is not a privilege and right reserved solely for those who wish to reproduce.
Sex is not inherently wrong or bad.
Sex does not require a punishment, and certainly not the punishment of forced pregnancy (Considering that is a crime against humanity, as recognized by the UN).
Pregnancy is a risk of having sex.
Just like wrecking your car is a risk when you drive.
Just like breaking a limb is a risk when you climb trees or go hiking or do parkour.
Just like drowning is a risk when we swim.
We allow people to receive healthcare for all of those situations, despite the risk they took on.
We do NOT deny people healthcare based on how they came to need it.

2) “Use a condom or birth control! Or both! Get a hysterectomy! Plan B!”

If you guys had even the most basic type of sexual education, you would KNOW that not one single form of protection is fool proof. Not one. Not a single one.
Not even when they’re doubled.
Hysterectomies are NOT performed willy nilly. People have to meet certain criteria, which normally includes being around 30 years old and already having children. Also, plenty of people who would abort right now may indeed wish to be parents in the future. Another thing, people should not be forced to undergo surgery, take time off work for it and recovery time, lose wages, all because some people get their panties in a wad over abortion.

Another thing is, the majority of people who acquire abortions WERE using contraception.

Yet another thing. Not everyone can even physically use protection. Plenty of allergies to condoms, sheepskin, active hormones in birth controls, skin sensitivities, and conflicts with pre existing necessary medications for illnesses that make dual use dangerous.
People are allowed to have unprotected sex, and they are allowed to abort.

3) “Well, you need to own up to your responsibilities! Your body isn’t yours anymore, you need to be responsible and give that child a chance”
No. We don’t. Taking responsibility for our choices means making the best decision to fix an undesirable situation.
Our responsibility is to ourselves first and foremost. It is OUR body being used as an incubator, it is OUR bodily resources being siphoned to sustain a potential life, it is OUR health potentially or immediately at risk, it is OUR entire lives and bodies that will be impacted by pregnancy and birth.

Whether you say the fetus is, or is not, part of our body, you lose. If it is NOT part of our body, then it has no place being inside of, attached to and taking from OUR bodies without our consent. If it IS part of our body, we are in charge of what we do with it and whether we want it inside of us or not.

4) Anything related to “god” in terms of using it for judgment and condemnation
Your god is violently pro abortion. Your god has slaughtered first borns, commanded dashing children against stones til they die, ripping fetuses from their mothers wombs, and even providing an abortion potion to a man because he suspected his wife of infidelity.
Part Two of this, your god has no place in healthcare. Your god is not everyone’s god.

5) “Abortion is murder! You’re all killers”
Actually no. Law, science and medicine disagree. You can have your opinion, but your opinion is wrong if it is against facts. Bodily autonomy bruh, learn it and love it.

6) “You’re so selfish! Think of all the infertile couples and other people who can’t have babies! Just  give it to a family to love them!”

No. Hell no. That is a viable option for someone willing to remain pregnant and give birth. Plenty of people are NOT willing. Fertile people’s uteruses are not fetus factories for infertile couples. Their issues are no one else’s burden.
Side note, being selfish is also NOT. A. CRIME. We can be as selfish as we want with our own bodies because they’re ours.

7) “ADOPTION!”
Nah. While there are already hundreds of thousands of children waiting, we do not need to put more into the system simply because some people have issues with healthcare.

8) “What if your mother aborted you?! Be thankful she was pro life!”

She isn’t pro life. My mother and many mothers are pro choice. If my mother had aborted me, I never would have been sentient to know or care or be aware.
I would NEVER have wanted my mother to only keep me out of obligation. I would never want to have been FORCED on my mother. I am elated that my mother CHOSE to keep me, out of love and desire. Not obligation. And we both fight and defend and promote abortion access and reproductive rights clear across the board!

9) “It should only be allowed due to rape or health issues!”
Says who? you? Why are YOU all of a sudden the decider for other people’s abortion? You are now trying to dictate which potential life is worthy or not. If the pregnant person doesn’t get to choose for themselves, the fuck makes you think you do? Nah. Being raped is not some magic thing that grants us the pity-choice of being granted control of our bodies. plus, if I show you two ultrasounds of fetuses, one from rape and one conceived accidentally through consensual sex, you couldn’t tell me which is which. The method of termination is still the same. There is nothing different except for you anti choicers thinking you are the judge and jury presiding over other people’s healthcare decisions.

10) “Well what about the father’s rights!!!!!”
Maybe, just maybe, if dudes are SO concerned with their potential offspring, they should take the proactive approach and NOT sleep with someone who does not want to be pregnant and who would abort! :o crazy I know! But, his rights end where her body begins. They can talk about their feelings, they can discuss both sides, but it comes down to the pregnant person to make the choice, end of."

"I’m terrified to be in the position of falling pregnant without trying to conceive. As a victim of violent sexual assault, it makes me sick to my stomach the thought that I could have fallen pregnant and have no means of abortion. Please pass this piece of legislation for myself, for my family and friends and for the youth of today. Please."
