Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"This issue is important to me as a young woman looking to pursue research in a STEM field. It is not equitable that my lack of reproductive rights can put my future career on hold, as opposed to male counterparts that do not have to concern themselves with the possibility of this situation."

"My body is my body. It’s not yours and its not your right to decide what happens to my body. I have every right to make the decision to abort or not abort. When you take that away from me, it just shows how far away we are from equality and that my opinions and decisions for myself mean nothing."

"Woman should be able to choose what is done with their body. You have to consider what circumstances a person is in when they become pregnant and understand that having a baby might not be what is best for them at the time espefially in young girls, who might still be in school."

"There a numerous reasons why a woman, and in some instances, a girl might need /want an abortion. Not one of these reasons is anyone else’s business except the woman seeking the procedure. No if’s, no buts. It is her body, her reason, her gut wrenching decision."
