Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Women must have the right to avail themselves of an abortion if they need one. It is not the responsibility or right to of others to believe they can know all the possible circumstances that may occur such that the solution is to have an abortion. Therefore there should not be any impediment such as having the matter still part of the criminal code that may limit a woman’s right to determine her own life."

"Bringing a new life into this world is sometimes a complex and challenging decision but it should always be a woman’s right to choose. If a woman decides to terminate her pregnancy she should feel safe and supported. It is vital that a woman be free to choose because if she doesn’t her health and wellbeing are seriously challenged."

"I am appalled that this archaic law still exists in NSW and that the majority of people’s views on this issue have been ignored for so long. Women must have control over what happens to their bodies – nobody else."
