Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"It is so incredibly important to remove this stigma against abortion and instead demonstrate how the right to choice is concerned with reproductive health and women’s rights. Queensland and New South Wales laws need to be updated and brought in line with the rest of Australia’s states and territories. Women SHOULD have the right to choose whether they do want to carry a child for 9 months and become a mother. There is no justification for disallowing women to have full and total control over their bodies. These laws are outdated and need to be changed."

"The criminalisation of abortion is grounded in misogyny and sexism, and I do not accept that my body is under the control of a legislative instrument, instead of my own free will."

"Dear Sir or Madame,
It is the right of every woman to decide what is right for them, unfortunately it is a hard choice to have an abortion .
But sometimes necessary and this can be the only way for many women.
This can be either due to financial concerns, health, limited resources or work, career and education.
Sometimes it is a sad fact of life that a hard choice like this has to be made .
It is the right or the women involved to make an informed decision.
Education is always number one to try and prevent this from very young.
The right of the women and the choice of her body is totally up to her and no one else.
Yours Sincerily ,
Linda McHenry"
