Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

"Becoming pregnant is as natural a process as breathing. As human beings we have very little control over nature. Pregnancy is such a big thing for any women or little girl. It can physically be dangerous and alters a females life for ever regardless of what happens or which way she chooses. They may be times in life were such a monumental and significantly life altering situation may occur. This as a natural process does not describing the between life circumstance, age or method of conception. They may be times where it is so unjustly fair to rehire a female to have their entire life affected so greatly by such a big life alteration that they are neither prepared for or capable of giving the support required. Not only to the female but also the potential child you could be setting up a life of heart ache, misfortune and disadvantage. Some times it is a case of being cruel to be kind. No one should have to support another life when they are not ready or capable. If is not fair to either lives. All children should be wanted children, brought into loving homes with adequate care and preparation for the support of their whole life. Sometimes females will need to make a cruel but overall kinder choice to save two lives. The option to make that choice needs to be available for the benefit of the whole of society for females who know and feel that abortion is going to be the kinder option."
