Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Main argument against this is religious- I think that there should be a separation of church and state and people can make their own decisions reflecting their personal beliefs and circumstances."

"I have three younger sisters, and living in a state that is hostile to their reproductive rights is unacceptable. The choice to have an abortion is not one to be taken lightly, but it is one that needs to be a choice. The idea that such an action is considered criminal is outdated and unfair to women, and I would hope that MP’s in this day and age would be informed enough and wise enough to make the right choice for women’s health."

"Because I should have the right to access medical care that I need regardless of any reasons why. My body is my choice. Women should have access to affordable and safe if that’s what they believe is the best choice for them. The law should not be making these decisions for half of its population. When abortion isn’t readily accessible it will not decrease the number of unwanted or unplanned pregnancies, it will only increase the number of unsafe abortions. If the government wants to decrease unwanted and unplanned pregnancy there needs to be a greater focus on educating young people, and more easily accessed birth control. Abortion is a choice a women should be able to make and go through with if she feels it is right for her. The government shouldn’t take that right away from her. Women are a strong and powerful part of the community and deserve the right to choose what is best for themselves."
