Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Every woman should have a right to CHOOSE what to do with her body. Even if you personally don’t think that having an abortion is right then you don’t have to have one, but women should at least have the option to have a safe and legal abortion should they want it. Having them be illegal is more harmful because it causes women to perform unsafe abortions in backdoor clinics, or even do it themselves. Women should have the choice and it’s not for a group of men to decide what a woman’s body should be subjected to."

"As the owner of my own body I should have the right to treat it as such. It’s completely demeaning that this law could even be here in the first place. We’re not in 1950."

"I would like to have the right to choose what I do with my body. It is unfair on the children and the woman to take away that right. If a woman feels that she is not ready to have a child, her choice should be respected. It would save that child from and unfair life and foster care."
