Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"What a person does with their own body should not be dictated by others. Why force someone to have a child that they emotionally or financially cannot handle? Why force someone to have a child just to put it up for adoption?
Didn’t want to/can’t look after your own genetic material? Make a child against your will anyway and see if anyone wants it. I think that’s really, really horibble to force on someone.
If your answer is to “have safer sex” then maybe put some effort, money and real research into sexual health classes in schools.
Please, don’t tell someone what they must and mustn’t do with their reproductive organs."

"Stop prioritising developing cells over my right to bodily autonomy. We aren’t forced to donate blood or organs, even dead people’s autonomy is respected and organs cannot be taken to save a life — but women’s bodies can be forced to continue an unwanted pregnancy? DECRIMINALISE ABORTION this is patriarchal infantalisation at it’s worst."

"I am signing this petition because it high time our government represented women’s rights and the option for abortion is a women’s right."
