Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Do you seriously think that any woman makes this decision lightly? This is a last option for any woman finding herself here, and I think if she is strong enough to ask for this procedure, then it should be undertaken by the state. I find it disgusting that once we hit the age of adulthood, we can do so many things that require maturity, but as a woman, in 21st century australia, the government still has a say over my reproductive organs? That in itself is criminal. All those children carried to term that are unwanted, no child deserves to be unwanted, unloved or a mistake that couldn’t be fixed. Let women make health choices for themselves, please."

"I would like to know that if it ever came down to myself or a friend making the difficult decision to abort a child that we would be safe and supported in doing so. Women must have the right to decide what happens to their bodies!"
