SA: Remove barriers to timely care for survivors
Victim-survivors of sexual assault should be supported with the care and support they need - no matter where they live. But many South Australian survivors are forced to wait or travel hours to access a forensic medical examination after being raped.
A victim-survivor might seek a forensic medical exam to document their injuries; and collect forensic evidence that can help identify the person who committed the crime. This process is also an important space for medical care and medical screening - including for strangulation; blood borne diseases and potential pregnancy.
Too many victim-survivors can’t access this critical service when they need it. In fact, for survivors in Port Lincoln, there are no local services available - that means a victim-survivor has to get to Whyalla or even Adelaide. In some cases that means being driven by police, a friend, or having to get on a public bus at this distressing time. At the same time, victim-survivors will be told to stay in the clothes they were assaulted in, unable to wash, drink, change or go to the bathroom, to avoid compromising potential evidence. It's distressing and can be retraumatising.
