1800 RESPECT

News editors of Australia: Will you make this one simple change?

Imagine if every newspaper article about family violence included the helpline number. It's 1800 RESPECT. It's free to call. It can help save lives and it helps vulnerable people every day. And astoundingly, most newspapers simply don't bother to include it.

Australia’s domestic violence crisis is making headlines around the country, but many women experiencing abuse right now still don’t know where they can get help. At the same time, just 8% of media stories on domestic violence this year have included information about where those affected by family violence can get help.

Can you help to change that? Newspaper editors listen to their readers - after all, they have to sell copies. Join the campaign calling on the editors of Australia’s major papers to include 1800 RESPECT in all stories about family violence.

--If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit 1800RESPECT.org.au. In an emergency, call 000. For more information about a service in your state or local area download the DAISY App in the App Store or Google Play.--

To the Editors in Chief of all Australian media outlets,

We urge you to publicly commit to include referral numbers for family violence services in any story you run about domestic and family violence, and to implement responsible reporting guidelines.

"I have survived two horrific marriages and had many abusive boyfriends.
I never said anything about it to anyone because they acted like they weren’t doing anything wrong and convinced me I was over reacting and being too sensitive.
If I had known there was someone I could talk to, to get some perspective , and education tabout what constitutes abuse, I might have recognised it sooner and had some help in leaving these relationships instead of having to struggle to find the strength on my own with no support.
Please let’s not leave people stranded with no where to turn.
Include some education or at least a number so people can have idea of where to turn if they need it. THank you."

"I am thoroughly sick to death with successive governments turning a blind eye to the ill treatment of women. It is a farce that this dickwit of a priminister is minister for women, and has the temerity to refuse to lift the tax on tampons and to ignore the fact that women NEED protection from the ignorant bastards that abuse them. So much for his religious beliefs."
