Tell the govt: fully fund women’s safety

Domestic and family violence services, sexual violence services, women's legal services - all play a vital role in supporting women's safety and wellbeing.

But right now government priorities and funding decisions mean that services aren't resourced to assist everyone that needs them. Every day violence services aren't fully funded is another day women are left in danger.

Government representatives talk about how we all have a part to play in addressing violence. But making sure frontline services are resourced to support everyone who needs them is squarely the responsibility of governments. 

Join us in calling on all government to make women’s safety a non-negotiable at the heart of their budgets.

If you or someone you know is affected by sexual or domestic or family abuse, you can access support from Full Stop Australia's National Violence and Abuse Trauma Counselling and Recovery Service by calling 1800 385 578 or at fullstop.org.au. If you are in danger, call 000. The Men's Referral Service is available on 1300 766 491 for men, or friends and family of men using violence.

There are gaping holes in the safety net that should be in place for women affected by sexual, domestic and family violence. Funding is urgently needed across every part of the system.

"As a victim many times over of male violence – emotional, psychological, physical and sexual – this issue matters on a personal level. As a female it matters to me on a human level. The rates of violence committed against women have been at crisis point for so long I think it’s become the norm, and thus seemingly easy for governments and society to just ignore it. Or raise their hands and say it’s too complex and too big to do anything about. Boys will be boys. And a 1000 other excuses.

But time is up. We need a government that will put it’s money where is mouth is. Who will clearly tell the Australian public, and the rest of the world, that male violence against women and gender-diverse people is heinous and will not be tolerated. To show the victims that they matter and will be supported every time. To show the perpetrators that there will be real consequences for their actions and support to change where possible/reasonable.

It’s 2022. I want to stop citing the year and being disgusted and dismayed at the state of violence against women and gender-diverse people. I want to say, “it’s 2023 and with sufficient funding, the system is actually working with and for victims, and making inroads to stop the violence before it happens.”"

"I work at a womens refuge where women are fleeing from DV and having to leave all their belongings and are then left to look after the children without the help of their partner and usually on a Centrelink income. Its time that women were made to feel important and that we care about their safety and their worth."
