End Sex Discrimination

We're calling on the Federal Government to finally deliver on its promise to end discrimination in religious schools.

In Australia it is still legal for a woman employed by a religious school to be dismissed, demoted or denied employment  because she wants to start a family using IVF, entered into a new relationship, or becomes divorced during her employment (even if that marriage was violent).

This is unacceptable.

No one should lose their job due to discrimination on the basis of their relationship status or pregnancy.

The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) handed down a blueprint for reform last year, finding that the religious ethos of a school could be maintained without such broad exemptions.

Equality shouldn't come with exceptions.

"I recall being asked at a job interview what my father did for a living, if I had a boyfriend and if I was on the pill. I said I didn’t think these things were relevant. Needless to say I did not get the job. That was in 1976. Thankfully a lot has changed since then but there are still points of vulnerability where people can be discriminated against under the Sex Discrimination Act that exempt discrimination against women, LGBTQ+ people and more. Please tighten these exemptions.
Kind regards
Leonie Aldcroft"
