Feminist Book Clubs
Fair Agenda’s Feminist 'Book' Clubs are an opportunity to strengthen our muscles in the fight for feminist futures, while connecting with others in our communities and taking tangible action in the fight for a fair and gender equitable future.
Just like a traditional book club, each group will all be reading the same text beforehand - from a list of content curated by the Fair Agenda team, that is particularly relevant to this moment in time. Unlike a traditional book club, groups won’t be reading a whole book - instead, we'll reflect on an excerpts / articles / content pieces, each taking less than three hours maximum to read.
We encourage you to start a Feminist 'Book' Club in your community (find out more here) - or you can get involved in one of the groups listed below.
Fair Agenda's Online Feminist 'Book' Club: July

-
Pages 178 - 179 (Excerpt of Broken Promises)
-
Pages 280 - 285 (Testimony of Aunty Caroline Briggs AM)
-
Pages 298 - 301 (Testimony of Aunty Di Kerr OAM)
-
Pages 338 - 343 (Testimony of Nerita Waight)
-
Pages 348 - 351 (Testimony of Aunty Nellie Flag)
You can access the Report online here. It is also available in hard copy at the State Library of Victoria in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.
Why this reading, in this moment?
The Uluru Statement from the Heart called for Voice, Truth and Treaty across the country.
The Yorrook Justice Commission was Victoria's and Australia's first formal truth-telling inquiry into the historic and systemic injustices perpetrated against First Peoples through colonisation. It took place over four years, and thousands of Victorians shared evidence. This Report contains excerpts from that testimony, and the Commission's findings.
Off the back of the Commission, Victoria was the first state to deliver Treaty. Heading into the Victorian state election, that Treaty is now under threat - with the Victorian Opposition Leader committing to repeal Treaty if elected.
Understanding the importance of Treaty, and the role of First Nations justice in a gender just future has never been more important. These excerpts in particular discuss the experiences of First Nations women; and the intersections of First Nations justice and gender justice.
How Feminist 'Book' Club will run:
Each meeting of the Feminist Book Club:
- There will be a quick opportunity for connection and check in with other participants (using zoom Break out rooms)
- We will all discuss what we’ve taken from the text, and how it relates to working for feminist futures
- We will all share what we're taking away from the reading
- The Fair Agenda team will share an opportunity to take action in current campaigns for gender equality
Feminist Book Club - Newcastle
Please join my very first Feminist Book Club meeting!
I’m hosting this as part of a new initiative from Fair Agenda (the gender justice campaigning group).
This is the first of book clubs that I will run every 6 weeks - where we'll connect over a different text that relates to our collective fight for a better future while also connecting with others passionate about creating fairer futures.
Just like a traditional book club: we all read the same text (chosen from a list of timely feminist content).
Unlike a traditional book club: you won’t be asked to read a whole book (instead we'll all read an excerpt / article or podcast will always take less than 3 hours of your time).
During book club: We'll check in with each other; reflect on what we’ve taken from the text, as well as how it relates to what we’re up against in the fight for a better future. And I’ll also share a quick update on opportunities to take action in current campaigns for gender equity.
Hope you can join for good company, chats, and snacks.
