Feminist Book Club 1: Hope in the Dark
Please join my very first Feminist Book Club meeting!
This is the first of book clubs that I will run every 6 weeks - where we'll connect over a different text that relates to our collective fight for a better future while also connecting with others passionate about creating fairer futures.
Just like a traditional book club: we all read the same text (chosen from a list of timely feminist content). Unlike a traditional book club: you won’t be asked to read a whole book (instead we'll all read an excerpt / article or podcast will always take less than 3 hours of your time).
This Book Club will focus on the opening chapter of Rebecca Solnit's Hope in the Dark.
Specifically: ‘Foreword to the Third Edition: Grounds for Hope’ (pages xi - xxvi)
Why this book, now?
Best explained by Solnit herself, in the opening paragraph:
“Your opponents would love you to believe that it’s hopeless, that you have no power, that there’s no reason to act, that you can’t win. Hope is a gift you don’t have to surrender, a power you don’t have to throw away. And though hope can be an act of defiance, defiance isn’t enough reason to hope. But there are good reasons.”
During book club:
We'll check in with each other; reflect on what we’ve taken from the text, as well as how it relates to what we’re up against in the fight for a better future.
I’ll also share a quick update on opportunities to take action in current campaigns for gender equity.
