Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"Its 2016 not the middle ages people. How ridiculous that affordable and supported reproductive health options including abortions are not available to every women for any reason. Who are we to judge another women’s decisions not to continue a pregnancy. It’s her life and body. I suggest you all have a read of the 2001 Donohue and Levitt study “The Impact of Legalised Abortion on Crime”. In case you need another reason to change our seriously out dated laws."

"The decision to have a child should be just that – a decision, not a compulsory sentence. Also, blanket laws like Queensland’s never take account of the many ways in which human beings are different and need to be considered as individuals."

"It is important to any woman. Prevention is always better, but having an abortion is a very personal choice and never taken lightly. No Government should have the authority to take that decision away from the woman involved."
