Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"I believe abortion should be legal for every woman in Queensland – and Australia – because we as women deserve to have the right to determine what we do with our bodies. If I cannot support my child financially, if I’m not in a stable relationship with the father or maybe I just don’t want a child at that time, I should be able to terminate the pregnancy on my own grounds. Men in parliament should not decide for the entire populous of women in Queensland what we should do with our bodies. You do not have that right and I believe that every woman should have a safe and clean environment to have an abortion. You cannot force a child onto someone who doesn’t want one, that just creates more children in adoption centres and in foster care. It creates problems, and every child should have a loving family and be loved and be able to live their lives to the fullest. Abortion is not killing a child or a baby, it is terminating a foetus that would not have been aptly cared for during its lifetime. Or it’s literally just terminating someone you don’t want, it doesn’t need to be personified, the view that abortion is wrong is just wrong, but if you don’t want an abortion, by all means, have your baby, if you don’t want a baby, have the abortion. Do not force other people into your view just because it suits you better. You are not everyone else"

"As a man, my opinion on abortion is utterly irrelevant. The same is true for the members of parliament to whom this petition is addressed, regardless of their gender; it also holds true for law enforcement officials, members of the judiciary, and all other elected and appointed representatives of the state and Commonwealth. The only individuals whose opinions should be consulted regarding an abortion are those of the pregnant person concerned and their medical team. Bodily autonomy is the most basic, fundamental expression of personal freedom. No law should be permitted to restrict that freedom of choice."

"This should be an individual choice that we should be able to make and not based on what politicians or any other member of the public believes. My body and life choices shouldn’t be dictated by other members of the public or other politicians when it has nothing to do with them and doesn’t affect them in any way whatsoever. I don’t care what someone else believes in, I should be able to make the choice myself without any input from anyone else."
