Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"My body my choice, I, also got with all women (and those who are faced with issues of abortion) should be able to have the opportunity to choose for themselves if this is an avenue they wish to go down. Abortion is the choice of the person undergoing the procedure and should not be dictated by discriminatory or constructing laws. It’s my body therefore it should be my choice, yes recommendations from doctors and health care professionals should be taken into condiderafjon but in the end it should be my choice, not dictated by laws."

"I’m a woman, and I have the right to have autonomy over my own body. Reproductive rights are women’s rights, but they are human rights as well. All people must have safe and legal access to health care no matter the choices they make about their body."

"The stigma associated with falling pregnant is a ridiculous and outdated concept. If the time comes when one of our honorable MPs or their partner has an unwanted pregnancy by some circumstance, I hope they remember their decision in institutionalizing this stigma."
