Stop harassment at WA clinics

WA MPs: Vote yes to protect patients at abortion care clinics

Everyone deserves privacy and dignity when accessing healthcare.

But unfortunately in Western Australia, patients still face harassment and intimidation at abortion care clinics. In fact, patients have reported being accosted and being called "murderers", and staff have been spat on, and had holy water thrown at their cars.[1]

In just a few months the WA parliament is expected to vote on a bill that would create safe access zone protection. In other states, we’ve faced fierce opposition and attempts to water down these patient protections - so we need to make sure we have the community power to persuade every undecided member of parliament to vote yes to full safe access zone protections. "I feel it’s a woman’s right to make choices about her health and wellbeing without having her judgement called into question. Having people watch you go in and out of a facility like this for what ever reason is an invasion of privacy and makes people uncomfortable with what could be an already difficult decision."

"Abortion should be free, safe, legal and accessible. To be accessible means it must be possible to access services without intimidation or harassment. Instead of arguing there’s no point introducing clinic protection legislation just to have the high Court strike it down, the WA government should introduced the legislation to protect women – them argue it on its merit, if it comes to that. The antis are going to try it on anyway. It’d be better to start protecting women’s access in practice now."
