Sign the petition: hold universities accountable for failures on sexual violence

Everyone deserves to learn in a safe environment. But right now universities are failing students when it comes to sexual violence prevention and response. In fact every single week 275 students are being sexually assaulted in a uni context.

Most universities are failing to take even basic steps, including: ensuring teaching staff don’t have a history of using sexual violence; and that student survivors don’t have to sit in the same classroom as the person who raped them.

No student should ever have to drop out of uni because they feel unsafe on campus. We need change. And right now the government is deciding what to do about this problem.

Universities can’t be left to mark their own work on this issue. That’s why Fair Agenda and End Rape on Campus Australia are calling for independent and expert-led oversight, through a body like a Taskforce on sexual violence in universities, to hold unis and residences accountable on this issue. Can you show how much public support this reform has by signing the petition in support?

SIGN THE PETITION

To Federal Education Minister Jason Clare,

I'm extremely concerned that many universities and residences are failing students when it comes to sexual violence.

I urge you to create an expert-led independent oversight mechanism - like a Taskforce on University Sexual Violence - with a mandate to hold universities and residences accountable if they put students at risk.

Signed,

Fair Agenda will email petition signers from time to time with important updates

"Even though uni students are no longer children, many lived at home throught their schooling and have limited understanding of the wider world. Yes, they are adults, but they still need and deserve protection. My grand-children will one day leave home to study at universities. The same duty of care should apply to primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. In particular, anyone employed at a university should have a Working With Children Check and/or Police Check, as teachers do."
