Stop cuts to survivor safety phone program

Stop cuts to survivor safe phones program

A new phone can be a lifeline when a woman is escaping an abuser. It can help her stay safe, stay connected to support systems and service, and prevent further abuse.

Yet the Morrison Government is set to cut funding for the WESNET program that distributes smartphones to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in June. If this decision stands - 600 domestic violence survivors each month will miss out on a new 'safe' phone.

There's still a chance to keep this important program going -- sign the petition to join the campaign to save the safe phones program, and create a wave of backlash Minister Ruston and the Morrison Government can't ignore.

To Social Services Minister Ruston and the Morrison Government,

Domestic violence is a national crisis, and our governments should be ensuring all the services that can help women and their children get safe are funded to meet demand.

We urge you to reinstate funding to the Safe Technology for Women program, to ensure they can continue providing safe devices to women escaping and recovering from violence.

"I am the clinical practice manager of a D&FV counselling service. I work at the frontline with women and children who experience abuse. We receive very little support to help a huge, hidden disadvantaged population . An immediate safe communication system is essential for women and children whose lives are at risk."

"We have an escalating epidemic of domestic violence perpetrated by men. An ingrained culture that needs to change. Every thing we can do to assist women should be done…hands downs. These phones are a life line and this program needs to stay in place. Why would you cut funding to this program? Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Show some leadership on this issue for once."

My friends and I plead with you NOT to go ahead with this cut to a vital service to victims of domestic abuse, desperate women whose lives may be saved by having a safe phone."

"Dear Minister Ruston,

As part of our present government, please start running this country responsibly !

This means looking after the ‘battlers’ as well as the big and powerful – but not always honest – companies.

Yours sincerely, Anja van Eeuwen"

"The role of the government is to protect its citizens – all its citizens. Protecting the most vulnerable is, therefore, a government priority. This program puts protection into practice. Please fund it properly and protect more domestic violence survivors."
