Stop cuts to survivor safety phone program

Stop cuts to survivor safe phones program

A new phone can be a lifeline when a woman is escaping an abuser. It can help her stay safe, stay connected to support systems and service, and prevent further abuse.

Yet the Morrison Government is set to cut funding for the WESNET program that distributes smartphones to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in June. If this decision stands - 600 domestic violence survivors each month will miss out on a new 'safe' phone.

There's still a chance to keep this important program going -- sign the petition to join the campaign to save the safe phones program, and create a wave of backlash Minister Ruston and the Morrison Government can't ignore.

To Social Services Minister Ruston and the Morrison Government,

Domestic violence is a national crisis, and our governments should be ensuring all the services that can help women and their children get safe are funded to meet demand.

We urge you to reinstate funding to the Safe Technology for Women program, to ensure they can continue providing safe devices to women escaping and recovering from violence.

"People escaping domestic violence have a huge need for a mobile phone. The WESNET program should be supported by Government."

"Until men who profess to love someone stop abusing and killing them and damaging their children then all stops need to be out to assist these women. Keep in mind one woman a week is killed by someone who professes to love them -every 8 minutes a woman presents to hospital with injuries ( the top of the iceberg in methods used in DV) and yes this is in Australia.
I just wonder what part of this the The Australian Government does not get.
And alongside this we need investment in stopping men’s violence"

"As a family violence advocate, I have provided these phones to many women from all ages and cultural groups as a part of their safety plan, just so they can make contact us and to call 000. Many women are not allowed to have phones as a form of control and social isolation and other women are tracked with locating devices on phones, which makes their phone dangerous to keep on. These phone make a huge difference to the safety of women and children who are currently managing their risk on a daily basis sometimes on an hour to hour basis, don’t cut the funding. It really could be a life or death situation."

"I am a specialist family violence advocate working in Eastern Melbourne. Many of my clients are tracked by their partners who are using violence to them. Without the safe phone, they won’t be able to stay connected with their family, support services and police without fearing that their partner may find out their plan to leave."
