SA MPs: vote yes to decriminalise abortion

Legislation to provide safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in South Australia has just been introduced in parliament.

The change is desperately needed, and with each member of parliament expected to be casting an individual 'conscience' vote on the Bill, whether or not it becomes law could come down to just a handful of votes.

Recent fights in Queensland and NSW have proven that we can't take progress for granted. We're going to need a massive community campaign to ensure this passes the parliament - can you help make that happen by signing up to the campaign, and asking your friends to join you?

We all deserve to feel safe and in control of our lives, but right now archaic abortion laws deny South Australians the legal right to decide they need a termination. Instead, abortion is only legal if two doctors agree that a woman’s physical or mental health is endangered by pregnancy, or for a serious foetal abnormality. (You can find out more here)

To all members of the South Australian Parliament,

A woman knows what is best for her health, her body and her family. She should be able to access safe and legal abortion care if she needs it.

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion, and legislate for safe access to facilities providing this healthcare.

"S.A. needs to scrap this antiquated law written by men to criminalise women. Women are more than able to decide for their future and the future of their children, and S.A. has been one of the first states to recognise this by giving them the vote. Why are we so far behind on such an important issue? Vote to decriminalise abortion!"

"Reproductive freedom for all women now. No woman should face the possibility of going jail for one of the hardest decisions she’ll ever have to make."

"This is a healthcare issue. Abortion should be legal and accessible. No one should be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy. The mother’s physical and mental health should be the first priority."

"Because a woman has the right to choose whether or not she wants to keep or abort a baby. This is the same for babies who are diagnosed early disabled or with major health problems, conception as a result of rape, or ACCIDENTAL pregnancy. Women have a right to decide. It is a health issue not a criminal issue."

"It should be a woman’s choice, it is her body, her mind, and her life."
