Join the fight for accessible abortion care

We should all be able to access the reproductive healthcare we need - no matter where we live, or who we are.

Together, we have helped remove abortion from the criminal code -- but legal barriers were only ever part of the problem. Too many people around the country still face major affordability and service access barriers that mean they can't get abortion care when and where they need it.

Too many patients can't rely on their public hospital for care; can't easily find a healthcare service they can turn to in their area; or have to find $500 on short-notice in order to cover the out-of-pocket costs for this urgent and critical healthcare.

There are clear pathways for change - including supporting and training health practitioners who want to provide abortion care. In 2023 a Senate Inquiry recommended the Federal Government take action to help improve affordability and access to abortion care services. Now we need the Albanese Government to act.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade in the US provides a stark reminder that there is no room for complacency in the fight for reproductive justice. As the Committee's report notes - policies related to abortion are treated as matters of "conscience" for some members of parliament, so we can't assume they'll be supported on party lines. Fair Agenda's advocacy has helped to secure historic legal reform in recent years. Now we must continue to mobilise to show a public mandate for abortion to be not only legal but accessible. Can you join the call for action?

To all Australian parliaments,

We all deserve agency over our body, healthcare and future.

We call on you to protect safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care - and ensure that anyone who needs abortion care can access it when and where they need it, regardless of income.

Signed,

Fair Agenda will email petition signers from time to time with important updates

"As a long time rural advocate – we need urgent help to normalise abortion as part of health care. Stigma is a significant barrier for patients seeking care, impacting providers willingness to take up, deliver or even by trained to offer abortion care, and for health planners to include provision for services within their budgets. #reproductiverights"

"This issue is important from many sides 1/ women’s health and safety. Without options people in situations they don’t want to be in wil be more likely to get this procedure from alternate sources leading to unsafe medical operations no oversight or education of people performing the porocefure.

2/ strain on economic resources

3/ public safety unwanted children can often become neglected and more likely to become criminals and/or live below the poverty line

4/ body autonomy, taking away the right to chose what’s going on/ in your body/
will set a precedent of the government not longer need your permission to vaccinate or carry out medical procedures including surgery regardless whether you want to or not (as a patient)

6/ privacy, in the event the government will have a say or even a duty to prosecute anyone aiding or having an abortion means to determine patients have may include them being permitted to medical information without consent."

"This is important to me because I live in rural Australia where abortion access is so so disproportionately and unnecessarily difficult and compounding for rural people, and also for those rural providers pushing against the grain too. Structural, political, workforce and logistical barriers continue to impinge on the rights for rural people to experience the same reproductive health care as urban people, and that is unacceptable."
