Greenlighting discrimination

Stand against a licence to discriminate

Right now the Morrison Government is deciding whether or not their proposed “religious discrimination act” will include dangerous provisions that would allow one person’s faith to override another person’s right to be protected from discrimination. And their decision will have big consequences for women and LGBTIQ+ people.

The Government is consulting to finalise it’s position right now; and some groups are pushing for provisions that could roll back important protections for women, like: safe access zones, the right to unbiased advice around abortion; and many people’s access to services or employment.

The good news is there’s still a chance to influence what gets brought before parliament. Can you show the Morrison Government that voters are worried about creating a right to discriminate; and that we want laws to protect people of faith, women and LBTIQ+ equally?

Dear Prime Minister Scott Morrison and other Members of Parliament,

Discrimination causes incredible harm - to physical and mental health, and to an individual’s sense of acceptance and belonging.

Given that, we strongly support amending laws so all people – including people of faith – are protected from harm.

We need laws that ensure people of faith, women and LGBTIQ+ people are equally protected from discrimination and harm.

That means laws that provide a shield of protection to those who need it, but that don’t hand organisations or individuals a license to discriminate against and attack others.

We know that LGBTIQ+ people and women are the most likely to be negatively impacted by religious anti-discrimination laws which don’t get this balance right.

We strongly urge you and every Member of Parliament, to consult with all potential affected communities and ensure everyone is equally protected.

Signed,

Fair Agenda will email petition signers from time to time with important updates

"Any religious freedom legislation should include the principle of freedom FROM religion. A STRICTLY secular state is the only type of government that enshrines freedoms for both religious and non-religious people. Public policy and law should be based on evidence, reason and simple humanity, not sectarian values which only a minority of people hold."
