1800 RESPECT

News editors of Australia: Will you make this one simple change?

Imagine if every newspaper article about family violence included the helpline number. It's 1800 RESPECT. It's free to call. It can help save lives and it helps vulnerable people every day. And astoundingly, most newspapers simply don't bother to include it.

Australia’s domestic violence crisis is making headlines around the country, but many women experiencing abuse right now still don’t know where they can get help. At the same time, just 8% of media stories on domestic violence this year have included information about where those affected by family violence can get help.

Can you help to change that? Newspaper editors listen to their readers - after all, they have to sell copies. Join the campaign calling on the editors of Australia’s major papers to include 1800 RESPECT in all stories about family violence.

--If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit 1800RESPECT.org.au. In an emergency, call 000. For more information about a service in your state or local area download the DAISY App in the App Store or Google Play.--

To the Editors in Chief of all Australian media outlets,

We urge you to publicly commit to include referral numbers for family violence services in any story you run about domestic and family violence, and to implement responsible reporting guidelines.

"As a society, we need to get serious about the prevention of domestic violence and we must do everything within our power to achieve this. Too many women are suffering and dying."

"I really think this number should be advertised at bus and railway stations, also in pubs, clubs and other community places. Back in the 80’s I didn’t know where I could get help, so I went to my next door neighbour who diminished my extremely fearful and stressful state by saying “maybe if you showed him more love, he wouldn’t hit you!”"

"There have been too many, mostly women, being abused by their partners,& too many have died as a result. The time has come where newspapers need to offer as much help for victims as possible,ie, where help is available. Many women do not have money & may have children, which make it extremely difficult. Please respond to Rosie Batty’s appeal."
