A game changing policy

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: With the change of Premier, Minister Upton has moved from the Sports and Recreation portfolio. Can you sign the petition to show the new Minister for Sport and Recreation - Stuart Ayres MP - the community support an equal prize money policy?

The NSW Government is thinking about requiring community sporting organisations applying for government grants to offer equal prize money to women and men.  And better yet, they might go further and apply the same criteria to all major sports events receiving Government help.

This world-class idea comes from NSW Sport Minister Gabrielle Upton, who floated the prospect to the media in March...

"I really want to encourage a discussion and awareness of the issue, that women have more challenges in securing funding.. For me, what role does government have in that? We have a grants program, if we support an event with prize givings, do we condition that?"[1]

Let's make clear the community are big fans of this goal. Sign the petition - and feel free to add a message of thanks to Minister Upton for putting this ball in motion!

To NSW Sport and Recreation Minister Gabrielle Upton,

We welcome reports that you are considering ensuring the NSW Government only grants funds to sports that only offer equal prize money for women and men. We support this proposal, and the extension of this approach to major events in NSW.

"There is a vicious cycle for women in sport – a lack of sponsorship, leads to a lack of media coverage, which leads to a lack of money involved with women in sport. This is a fantastic step towards trying to break that vicious cycle."

"I’m a 17, almost 18, year old girl who is passionate about women being treated and paid equally in sports and events that are on the same level of men. I believe that if men can make a career out of playing a sport they love, then women should be able to do that too."

"This is a no brainer. Treating women and men equally is the only legitimate use of government funds. Not even worthy of discussion."

"To even contemplate seperate costs and debt is beyond any mature and rational thought. It smacks more of childish boys in a primary school yard picking on girls just because they are different. It is unbelievable but then again… watching the politicians in question time… And take a look at the treatment of refugees fleeing murderous regimes, they are different to us so they get the same treatment as the regimes hand out. We need fresh and intelligent politicians not held back by outdated attitudes. "
