This is supposed to reflect "all Australian women"?

Campaign via Fair Agenda member Anisha:

Scrolling through my newsfeed today, my heart sank coming across Priceline's current Facebook cover photo. According to Priceline, they're celebrating the beauty of all Australian women. Yet they seemed to have missed a few of us out.

As a South-Asian woman, who has been an Australian citizen for the past 16 years, needless to say I felt erased. Where are the faces of women like me? Where are the darker skin tones that I identify with and see on a daily basis?

I understand that Priceline has tried to incorporate diversity into this picture. However, at a glance, the end result is incredibly white washed. For a campaign that claims to celebrate the beauty of “all Australian women” it’s just not good enough.

Representation in advertising and popular culture matters. It plays a huge part in how young people come to understand the world around them; it's plays a huge part in their sense of belonging, identity and worth. If these are the images we are putting out there as a reflection of 'all' Australian women, it's no wonder many people of colour are still treated as the other.

Seeing this was a kick to the guts and an ugly reminder that there are still people out there who refuse to acknowledge people like me as ‘real’ Australians.

It's also important to note that this campaign only reflects cis-gendered, able bodied women of a certain body shape, further isolating under-represented Aussie women.

Can you join me in urging Priceline to update their campaign to better reflect the diversity of “all Australian women”?

Dear Priceline,

Representation in advertising and popular culture matters. It plays a huge part in how young people come to understand the world around them; it's plays a huge part in their sense of belonging, identity and worth.

Your latest advert, which claims to celebrate the beauty of all Australian women is not an accurate reflection of this country.

We urge you to update your campaign to better reflect the diversity of “all Australian women".

"Australia is made up of a large diversity of women by size, shape, ethnicity. mobility/disability, race and dress – your photo is highly restrictive and in no way reflects this diversity – a nice example of discrimination through photographic media!! Pretty poor Priceline!"

"This is a company which apparently will reduce staff wages in line with the recent weekend penalty rate award so they are already a company that I will not do any business with. This only reinforces that decision."
