Speak up to help win safe and legal abortion care in NSW

Right now, there’s a historic opportunity to secure safe, legal and compassionate access to abortion care in NSW.

Laws to decriminalise abortion are being considered by the parliament, and they will be brought to their final vote in the week of the 15th September.

Members of parliament will be given a personal ‘conscience vote’ on the bill, which means that each wavering and undecided MP needs to be personally convinced.

It’s critical we show every MP that their constituents want them to support the legislation as it stands. That’s why every voice counts. Get involved in the campaign by signing and sharing the petition for reform.

Under current NSW law, abortion is a crime for a woman and doctor, except if woman's physical or mental health is in serious danger. These laws have a chilling effect on doctors willingness to provide abortion, and mean many doctors aren't willing to provide terminations in any circumstances.

New laws have been co-sponsored by 15 MPs, and have passed the lower house. Now they are being considered by the upper house, with 20 amendments expected to be proposed in the coming weeks.

Members of Parliament,

We urge you to vote to decriminalise abortion.

"As a young woman I was able to procure an abortion in NSW… but it was at the behest of a doctor who fortunately sympathised enough and understood I was not ready to parent, did not have the mental, social or financial resources at that time and was not yet with the partner with whom I wanted to create a family with. In my thirties I went on to marry and have two great kids and form a strong family unit. But I believe this should have been my choice, not the doctor’s or the law’s.

Most abortions occur in the first trimester when a fetus does not have the capacities of pain and awareness as they do in later stages of development and this is rarely taken into consideration in anti-abortion arguments.

In our society, in this time, with our technology, a woman wants the right to make choices about her body, her family and her economic future. We try to make sensible decisions and juggle the timing to have a baby based on our health, relationships, financial and career options. Men benefit from the women in their lives having choices. Men need abortion availability, too, they create pregnancies alongside women, sometimes with the women they are not most compatible to parent with, or with the right partner at the wrong time."
