Stop this shocking change to 1800 RESPECT

Campaign update: Fair Agenda member's helped ensure the Government's shocking changes to 1800 RESPECT featured in prime time news on The Project, and stayed in the headlines in the lead up to the election. Unfortunately the Coalition Government still plan to go ahead with their changes to this vital service.

----

New Federal Government changes mean that callers to the national sexual assault and domestic violence counselling service 1800 RESPECT will no longer have guaranteed direct access to experienced trauma counsellors from July 1.[1]

It's a change that experts are concerned will have dangerous implications for the tens of thousands of women who rely on the phone service annually - many of whom have never reached out for service help before.

The number one factor that impacts a person's ability to recover from domestic violence or sexual violence is the response they receive on their first disclosure. And an inappropriate response to someone's first service contact can actually make things worse.

Sign the petition to join the call for the Government to reverse this shocking changes to 1800 RESPECT.

More information

This change means that those answering the phones will act as gatekeepers for women calling for trauma counselling.
The response to first disclosure is so critical for survivors of violence, with the potential to make things better, or worse. An inappropriate response to first disclosure can compound existing trauma, make it less likely the person will ever reach out to police or services for help again.
